Here are 3 easy steps to securing your new ‘Sweatheart’:
1. The Initial Interaction
Make small talk after class! This can be about something that happened during the sweat session that
you both experienced, or can relate to. Small banter after a workout is a sure-fire way to build rapport,
especially when the endorphins are still up.
How about something(s) like: "Man, that ab drill was killer! These kettlebells never seem to get any
lighter. Have you tried [insert class name here] yet?"
**Be sure to wait a few minutes post-pump as everyone needs a moment to catch their breath and
decompress.
2. The Second Sighting
Now, you must arrange a time to see each other again, but casually! What about something like, "I’m
trying to take different classes, what else do you think is tough around here? Does this teacher always
teach in this style, or do you think next week will be different? What classes do you take? I could use a
buddy my first time in these new classes."
The more often you’re around each other the better.
**Remember- Once you’ve established a connection, always say hi!
3. The Big Finish
Eventually, transition to meeting up outside of the gym. If you’re not comfortable going from class-
buddy to Casanova, try sticking to something ‘health and fitness’ oriented. You’ve established a common
ground/interest in this vein so why not use it to your advantage!
How about a little, "Hey do you want to grab a smoothie after class? Have you tried the new place right
down the street yet? What do you mean you’ve never had a wheat grass shot, let’s go get healthy!"
Then you make another sweat date, hang out afterwards, and- BOOM! Handled.
FINAL PRO TIPS: Be mindful to read body language. If a person is giving short answers, closes their arms,
looks away constantly, and/or attempts to walk away repeatedly, let go. A. Nobody wants to be that
creepy, lingering guy at the gym, and B. Nobody likes to feel uncomfortable when they come to
workout.
Also, be careful about talking to people during class as that can be distracting and bear negative results.
Try not to stare, that’s weird. If you happen to notice someone a few times, and you notice them
noticing you, maybe that’s the day you decide to start that conversation about how sore you are…
P.s. Real talk- I personally acquired my girl from the gym, using steps 1-3. Trust me, people, it works!
