You’ve heard a lot about it. You’re aware of its benefits (which there are many [https://trufusion.com/blog/hot-hot-hot-the-skinny-on-how-heat-transforms-your-bod/]), and you’re curious to see what the hype is all about. But it’s understandable if you feel a little bit intimidated to step in for the first time.
We’ve listed some tips to make taking your first heated class less frightening. Give it a shot and you just might get hooked too.
Choose the Right Class
Some classes are heated into the 90s while others, like our Tru Signature Series, are heated to 103 degrees. If you’re new to the heated experience, it might be wise to start on the lower side and give yourself time to acclimate.
Also consider the intensity of the class. Even though Tru Hot Pilates and Tru Barefoot Bootcamp are heated to 95 degrees, these classes are intense and quite challenging even for the experienced gym-goer. If you do decide the start with one of these classes, be sure to read the Manage Expectations section.
You can find more details in each class description on the schedule.
Wear and Bring the Right Gear
Check your modesty at the door for a heated class. Everyone in the TruTribe will be in the same boat you are and frankly won’t care. Tight fitting clothes are better. Loose fitting clothing traps heat. Don’t wear all cotton garments. You might find wearing the less clothes, the better. Better sweat on the mat than wearing it.
A quality yoga mat will go a long way, and be sure to bring a couple of towels. Some even bring a frozen towel to class. You’ll have to determine what works best for you.
Most importantly, bring plenty of water – colder the better. Freeze one of your bottles the night before or pack it with plenty of ice. Taking a sip of ice cold water in the middle of class can do wonders.
Show Up Early
Don’t be shy. Be sure to introduce yourself to the instructor before class begins (Our instructors get to class early themselves) and let them know it’s your first heated class. That way, they can keep an eye on you and provide tips and exercise progressions if necessary. Also, getting there a little bit early, setting up and sitting on your mat for a few minutes will better acclimate you for class.
Manage Expectations
If you’ve never taken a heated class before, it might surprise you how much energy it requires. Don’t expect to whip through class like you usually would. The best thing you can do is pace yourself and allow plenty of time to acclimate.
Hydrate. Hydrate. Hydrate.
We cannot stress how important it is to hydrate before, during and after class. Drink 17-20 ounces of a non-caffeinated beverage at least two hours before class, and drink frequently and early during class. Be sure to take sips at every break.
Taking the right steps before class will make for a much better experiencing during, and we guarantee you’ll catch the bug and make heated classes a part of your regular routine.
